☯ I Ching Hexagram Meaning

41. Decrease
Sǔn · Mountain over Lake
Judgment

Decrease can bring supreme good fortune when what is reduced below serves to genuinely strengthen what is above, sincerity mattering far more here than lavish means. A simple offering given honestly accomplishes more than an elaborate one given carelessly. Even loss, handled with the right spirit, can become a form of real gain.

Image

A lake sits beneath a mountain, giving up some of its depth so the height above can stand firm. A person who takes this to heart handles a rising temper by pausing before reacting, and treats a craving as something to quietly set down rather than immediately satisfy.

Meaning

You are being asked to give something up, or scale something back — spending, a commitment, an indulgence, even some of your own certainty — and Decrease suggests this reduction is not pure loss if it is done with the right spirit and serves something worth strengthening.

This energy asks for sincerity over show: a modest, honest offering of time, attention, or resources matters more than a grand gesture made carelessly. What you decrease in one area, given willingly, often ends up increasing something more valuable elsewhere, whether that is trust, clarity, or simply room to grow.

What could you willingly decrease right now that would actually strengthen something more important to you?

When the significator of either good or evil shall be stationary, and angular, it shall be more durable. But it shall be the more mutable and variable, if the significator shall be cadent from angles, and retrograde. - William Lilly (1602.-1681.)
